For the development of new technologies is responsible for two independent groups of scientists from the National University of Singapore and from University of Tokyo. Their developments are, if I may say so, to “simulate the taste sensations”.

The first development for the authorship of the Singapore inventors is created in 2013 and includes a special spoon with a grid of tiny electrodes. These electrodes when exposed to the taste buds of the tongue can imitate the bitter, sour and salty tastes. Unfortunately, the authors did not manage to get simulate the sweet taste, but it came from their Japanese colleagues.

The device of Japanese scientists working on the technology of the so-called thermal simulation: the working part of the device consists of tiny solid-state thermoelectric elements (or, if simpler, Peltier elements) that can be heated and cooled with an incredibly high speed. The algorithms of temperature control in such a way that upon contact with the tongue it causes a sensation of sweetness.

Both technologies are designed not only to make virtual reality more realistic, in terms of entertainment content, but also have a lot of applications that can help people. For example, such stimulation can give patients who have lost the ability to taste, to regain that feeling. Or, for example, the gadget may find applications in nutrition, when a person is very difficult to give up favorite foods in favor of useful, but not always delicious food.

Matrix PowerWatch, a smartwatch charged from your body heat

Manufacturers constantly have to compromise: either to make the device larger and allow it to run longer or to reduce its size, but in this case, you will have to recharge it at times more often. Engineers from the Matrix figured out how to solve the problem rather elegant way: they turned to the source of energy for the human body, so they watch PowerWatch does not need to charge.

Everything is arranged quite simple. You wear the watch on the wrist, and they are activated from your body heat. Once your temperature rises as a result of sports or any other physical activity – built-in clock battery is charging faster. When you take off watch, they go into sleep state to save energy. But even razladilis, they do store all your data, so for their safety to not worry. The watch is water resistant up to 50 meters.

But you never have to use the socket and charger! Watch convert heat into electricity using thermoelectric technology and Seebeck effect, opened in 1821. This effect considers the emergence of the electromotive force in a closed circuit consisting of series-connected dissimilar conductors, contacts between which are at different temperatures.

Engineers Matrix in the process of developing its watches created dozens of prototypes, and at the moment they have a perfectly working gadget, is ready for serial production. The project was published on the crowdfunding portal IndieGoGo and has already gained the required 100,000 dollars, so next year will begin production of PowerWatch, and in October they will be on store shelves at a price of $ 170.
